We Put Our Faith in Lance Briggs!

Brigg Business

Brigg Business

Since the departure of Brian Urlacher, Nick Roach, and Lovie Smith, the question hanging over the heads of football fans has been over how the defensive line will perform after such drastic change to the team. A lot of pressure has been put on linebacker Lance Briggs, and Briggs has volunteered himself for the responsibility of running the plays of the defensive line, keeping the line tight, and mentoring the rookies while making sure veteran players are focused and challenged by his leadership.

Brigg Trouble In Little Chi

Brigg Trouble In Little Chi

First, the concern about how Briggs would handle the pressure seems a little overdramatic. He has been a solid, key player for the Chicago Bears for over a decade, almost as long as Urlacher. Briggs has played twenty-five games in his career without Urlacher and was just fine. This included 2009 when Urlacher missed 15 games, the same year Briggs went to the Pro Bowl. He has missed four games in ten years. The challenge is not going to be whether or not Briggs can handle being relied on to run a defensive line; the challenge is how Briggs will manage a line of veterans and rookies under the guidance of a new coaching staff. Briggs has core teammates like Charles Tillman, Julius Peppers, and Tim Jennings returning, so the gaping absences will not be that difficult to adjust to in reality. Balancing veterans like D.J. Williams and James Anderson with rookies like Jon Bostic and Khaseem Greene means using his leadership abilities with the old dogs and the new recruits.

The Brigg Chill

The Brigg Chill

His performance in training camp has brought a lot of success and Briggs recognizes when he’s fallen short or made a bad call, hoping to keep getting sharper and maintaing and building on the progress he has made. Defensive coordinator, Mel Tucker, said Briggs’s performance is “a work in progress, but it’s been getting progressively better and that’s what you want to see.” Briggs himself recognizes the challenge before him and said, “It’s different. You’ve been in a system for a long time. You’re told to change and do things a different way. It just takes time.”

The Brigg Chill

The Brigg Bang

Time is fleeting. With a week until preseason football and a month until regular season, now is the time to focus on getting skills sharpened and players focused. With this team the Bears have a shot at a Wild Card spot in the playoffs, and with Briggs leading the defense the Bears are going to be a threat. Briggs has been helping the new coaches learn the Bears system, mentoring and guiding the rookies, and rebuilding a slightly fractured yet determined defensive line. We put our faith in Lance Briggs because he’s the Bear with the talent, focus, drive, and leadership skills to drive this team to victory.

The Cup Can Party, Y’all!

Act like professionals for the photo, boys. There are more fun photo ops to come.

Act like professionals for the photo, boys. There are more fun photo ops to come.

Now that hockey is over and the Blackhawks have brought the Stanley Cup to Chicago, there is only one thing that the team can do: properly treat the Stanley Cup to the best time an inanimate object can have in the Windy City! Of course, the entire team is up to the task of treating this fella right, but with this rowdy bunch of winners, we’re certain the Stanley Cup is having such a great time after just a week, he’ll want to renew his lease in a year. So, where has the Cup been?

Hello, I'm a professional and this is professional.

Hello, I’m a professional and this is professional and we are all professional and pretending having the Stanley Cup on this table isn’t the coolest thing ever.

Like the rest of us, the Stanley Cup has to do work before it heads out to party. Luckily, Coach Quenneville (aka “Hockey Ditka”) is a total hockey professional and knows that the Stanley Cup has to be a grown up and tour the news shows before it can go out and party.

You can eat one out of the other!

You can eat one out of the other!

Of course, the news rounds drew the party when Man B Que brought the party with a meat-based party snack Stanley Cup! So, let’s hope the Stanley Cup was used to help make a stew or hold a delicious dip or marinade.

After making visiting the usual morning show talking heads, the Cup gets to go out with the team, and they make sure to show Lord Stanley’s Cup a marvelous time.

"Top Ten Reasons Why The Blackhawks Rule!"

“Top Ten Reasons Why The Blackhawks Rule!”

Patrick Kane took a break from partying hard to take the Stanley Cup to visit David Letterman in New York. This is definitely the tamest time the Cup has spent with Kaner, The Party Mullet Monster in it’s week in Chicago.

Wasted away again in PatrickKanerville.

Wasted away again in PatrickKanerville.

The Stanley Cup accompanied Kaner onstage at a Jimmy Buffett concert where, we assume, it was filled with either margaritas or cheeseburgers in paradise.

Let's rock harder

Let’s rock harder

Not to be outdone by Patrick Kane, Keith and Carcillo took the Cup to a Rush show so it could recover from the beach ball volleying by getting rocked hard.

The Stanley Cup, no doubt, has many adventures ahead of it as the Blackhawks keep it in tow for a year of partying. Concerts, parades, and other events are certainly in its future here in Chicago and every citizen of the Windy City will have their eyes peeled to get their chance to be in the presence of Lord Stanley’s Cup. However, we can all agree that it’s greatest night was June 24 when it reflected the glow of champagne-soaked victory of the 2013 Chicago Blackhawks; it was definitely shining its brightest as it found itself in the glow and champagne spray surrounding Andrew Shaw.

Let's all get matching Andrew Shaw victory scream tattoos, Chicago!

Even though hockey is over, the Stanley Cup gives us a reason to keep celebrating until October when all our favorite guys hit the ice again, ready to defend their title. Show your support for Andrew Shaw with our selection of Andrew Shaw tee shirts and jerseys.

Let’s Make a Deal!

Well, it’s summer! It’s time for beer, picnics, beaches, saying good-bye to the recently-traded athletes, and saying hello to the newcomers to the world of Chicago sports. Yes, it’s that magical time of year when professional athletes are being traded like Pogs.

Pictured: Your age

Pictured: Your age

Yes, change is coming to the world of Windy City sports! This square dance of players and teams is a lot to keep up with, so let’s start with the best news of all, shall we?

Chicago Baseball

Thus far, the best news to come out of the wheeling and dealing of the trade game is that Carlos Marmol is almost the new problem of the Dodgers. The terrible relief pitcher and constant annoyance to Cubs’ fans is likely to be traded to Los Angeles unless he plays all of his six team rejections; if he does this he can become a free agent at the end of the season. However, it looks like the era of Marmol blowing it in the ninth inning is coming to an end. The darkness is over. The sun will come out tomorrow.

The truest thing ever put on Wikipedia ever.

The truest thing ever put on Wikipedia ever.

The Cubs also traded Scott Feldman and pitcher Steve Clevenger to the Baltimore Orioles for pitchers Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop. The White Sox, desperate to shake up their roster and get back to winning, signed outfielder Micker Adolfo Zapata, a sixteen-year-old from the Dominican Republic.

Chicago Bulls

Oh my God, you guys! I'm staying with the Bulls!

Oh my God, you guys! I’m staying with the Bulls!

Nazr Mohammed tweeted today that, essentially, he has gotten a verbal agreement with the Chicago Bulls and that he will be re-signed to Chicago. The fates of Luol Deng and Nate Robinson are still uncertain. However, it looks as though Deng will stay in Chicago while Robinson will be forced to find a home elsewhere in the NBA.

"Come 'ere, buddy. We're all gonna miss you."

“Come ‘ere, buddy. We’re all gonna miss you.”

The trade doesn’t quiet the rumors of friction in the power structure of the Bulls, however. The Bulls did not re-sign Ron Adams, Tom Thibodeau’s top assistant, when his contract expired. The rumor buzzing through the Internet is that there was friction between superstar coach Thibodeau and his assistant; meanwhile, General Manager Gar Forman assures there is no friction between Thibodeau and himself. Though friction between the higher-ups can create great success, just as the tension between Phil Jackson and General Manager Jerry Krause birthed the success of the Bulls in the nineties. Time will tell how this wheeling-and-dealing within the Bulls power structure will affect the Bulls.

Also, Derrick Rose is scheduled to play this season. So. we’ll see how that plays out.

Chicago Blackhawks

This fun is over, Bolly.

This fun is over, Bolly.

Well, with Bolland and Frolik hitting the happy trail to Canada, it’s clear that General Manager Stan Bowman is jumping quickly to preserve the Blackhawks’ impeccable roster of knock-down, drag-out talent. With a spectacular 2013 season, we are all hoping that Bryan Bickell will live up to the high expectations of fans and to the hard-earned contract extension. The NHL draft allowed for Bowman to give up Bolland and Frolik and fourth and fifth round picks for a pick in the second through fifth rounds. This also allowed the Blackhawks a fourth and fifth round pick in 2014 and four more years of Bickell. The fresh faces on the Blackhawks roster are looking spectacular and show that the Blackhawks are determined to tighten up their defensive line, a problem that brought them serious losses in the regular season and the playoffs. None of this guarantees a 2014 Stanley Cup victory, but Bowman is building one hell of a team to debut in October.

Let's hear it for the boy!

Let’s hear it for the boy!

With two of Chicago’s favorites leaving the team, let’s celebrate the superstar who was a big reason as to why the Stanley Cup is out and about partying with Patrick Kane: Bryan Bickell. Snag this Bryan Bickell player tee from our website (http://tinyurl.com/qjeq32m) and show your joy for the rough and tough left wing returning to the Blackhawks for another four years. It’s tough to see our favorites leave, but it’s better when the best stay because sports is good!

The Sports, They Are A’Changin

As with all teams in professional sports, the off season becomes the time to reflect on the previous year’s work, practice hard, gain new talent, and chuck the dead weight to the curb like the trash they are!

Pictured: The reason we lost!

Pictured: The reason we lost last year!

Yes, after spring training comes the summer dump. Free agents, general managers, player demands, and fan responses dictate the Wheel of Fortune for a player (or it goes they way of Tim Tebow getting signed to the Patriots and everyone in the United States facepalms so hard the population is concussed because why can’t he go away already?)

Blackhawks

Mr. Hockey

Mr. Hockey

After the 2010 Stanley Cup victory, the Blackhawks did what anyone would do with a winning team and got rid of 80% of the roster. It seemed that once the city cleared out after the downtown parade, players such as Antti Niemi, Dustin Byfuglien, and Tomas Kopecky were barely out of their jerseys before getting shipped to other teams. As the summer approaches, we wait with baited breath to see if the team we’ve grown to love so much will be split and scattered just as it was in 2010. Bryan Bickell will be a free agent this summer and the General Manager of the Blackhawks, Stan Bowman, obviously wants to resign the breakout star of this playoff season. Bickell has said, “I think [Chicago] is a second home to me…I feel this is a home to me.” Bickell made $600,000 this season and clearly deserves a raise; this is all possible as the Blackhawks are not only two million dollars from their pay cap and they are getting rid of Montador and Olesz. Marian Hossa, feared to be leaving the Blackhawks, will be staying as his departure would hurt the pay cap and as he was a major asset in and on the road to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Let's play some Hawkey!

Let’s play some Hawkey!

Bulls

Dude, I don't know where I'm going!

Dude, I don’t know where I’m going!

The newest rumor swirling around is that the Chicago Bulls are in talks about a contract extension with Luol Deng, a valuable player to the Chicago Bulls leading up to the playoffs until a viral infection confined him to a hospital bed during the playoffs. The cyclone of rumors circling around Deng had reports of his leaving the Bulls for the Wizards or the Cavaliers. The Bulls may also want to acquire LaMarcus Aldridge in the NBA Draft, which would mean having to give up Deng. Luol Deng’s future with the Bulls is uncertain as is that of Nate Robinson, the heart of the playoff team.  The roster is already expensive as Carlos Boozer, Joakim Noah, and Derrick Rose remain the crown jewels of the current Bulls dynasty. On a related subject, reports are also coming in that Derrick Rose will absolutely, totally, most definitely, without a doubt, duh, no doubt play this fall.

Cubs

Marvin K. Marmol, Will You Please Go Now?!

Marvin K. Marmol, Will You Please Go Now?!

There is some good news about all of the swapping and gaining of players in this season of change: The Cubs are finally getting rid of Carlos Marmol! Yes, the pitcher who loves to blow a lead and let the opposing team win in the ninth inning is packing his bags and headed to a new pitcher’s mound in a new town! Cubs General Manager, Jed Hoyer, said, “We realized in August of last year that we wouldn’t be able to trade him or acquire any value for him.” Marmol’s manager, Paul Kinzer, said, “[Marmol] loves Chicago, but I think in his mind he knows he has to get a fresh start.” We will go on record saying, “Hey, Chicago! Whaddya say? Marmol’s finally going away!” As it is clear that the Cubs will not be going to the playoffs, which is a major shock to all of us, perhaps now is the time to unload Marmol and start bringing up the eager players from the minor leagues to see what will work next season.

Finally, after a year away, former Boston Celtic and current hybrid of a human foot and a peanut, basketball superstar Larry “Hick From French Lick” Bird will be returning to manage the Indiana Pacers. Perhaps he can use all of his 1992 Dream Team magic to help the Pacers defeat Lebron and the Heat next season.

BLACKHAWKS!

In case you live under a rock, on the moon, or generally don’t have an understanding of the outside world and the events within it, something very extraordinary happened. Yes, something we’ve all been waiting for. Something so intense and magical that the world will be forever changed.

George Lucas got MARRIED!

FINALLY! THE DARKNESS IS OVER!

FINALLY! THE DARKNESS IS OVER!

This is the biggest news of the week.

OHHHH, that and the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Boston Bruins in the final two minutes of Game Six of the Stanley Cup playoffs and are now THE REIGNING STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS AND WIN FOREVER ON INFINITE EARTHS! SPORTS IS GOOD! SPORTS IS GOOD! SPORTS IS GOOD!

SPORTS IS SO DAMN GOOD!

SPORTS IS SO DAMN GOOD!

Coming out of pummeling the Bruins on Saturday, the Blackhawks traveled to Boston for Game Six. At first the game was steady and intense, but the intensity heightened when Andrew Shaw took a puck to the face in the first period.

Blackhawk down!

Blackhawk down!

The classy, upstanding citizens known as Bruins fans booed the disoriented and injured Shaw as he was helped off the ice. We feared that Shaw would be out for the game, but he returned. He returned and landed in the penalty box immediately because Boston roiled him up, now they had to deal with the Shaw we saw shout “I’ll f—ing kill you!” at the Wild, the Shaw who checked one of the Red Wings in the kidneys with his stick, and the Shaw we had not seen since the beginning of the playoffs.

Best behavior does not equate giving a shit

Best behavior does not equal giving a shit

Stitched up and skates laced, Shaw joined the rest of the Blackhawks in the second period where Captain Toews tied up the score. The third period had Chicago white-knucked and sweating. Boston took the lead and it seemed that Game Seven was inevitable with two minutes left in the game. Then, within 17.7 SECONDS OF EACH OTHER, Bryan Bickell tied up the score and, with a minute left, Dave “The Rat” Bolland scored the shot that won the Chicago Blackhawks Lord Stanley’s Cup.

Keep in mind, in 17.7 seconds the Blackhawks scored as many points against the Bruins as the Penguins did in their entire playoff series.

Every Blackhawk fan feels like this today (even through the hangover)

Every Blackhawk fan feels like this today (even through the hangover)

We won the Stanley Cup. We won the Stanley Cup with Patrick Sharp returning from a season of injuries to score more goals in the playoffs than he did during the regular season. We won the Stanley Cup with Patrick Kane shooting his way to being the highest-scoring player in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. We won with Corey Crawford overcoming the criticism and doubt of fans and being the most important asset to the Blackhawks in the playoffs. We won with Andrew Shaw and Bryan Bickell learning to reel in their rabid nature and focus that energy on being top-notch, reliable hockey players. We won Toews knowing his power with assists and allowing other players to shine. We won with Seabrook scoring crucial final goals in overtime. We won with Saad scoring his first ever playoff goal in the crucial first game against the Bruins. We won with the entire team taking down feared goalies like Jonathan Quick and Tuukka Rask. We won the Stanley Cup with Hossa, Frolik, Oduya, Stalberg, and Keith. We won the Stanley Cup with Dave Bolland recovering from a shaky playoff season to come back and score the game-winning goal that earned the Chicago Blackhawks the Stanley Cup.

nhl_g_hawkscup_gb1_576

We won because the Blackhawks are a team.

We won because the Blackhawks are a damn good team.

We won because no player is more important than any other player.

Because it’s the Cup.

In an era of sports where each team has a shimmering superstar glowing from the dull crown of the roster, the Chicago Blackhawks have no Lebron James, Derrick Rose, Derek Jeter, or Tom Brady. The metaphorical crown of the Blackhawks is blinding with equally-valuable jewels. They don’t rely on one member of the team exclusively; they rely on each other and play off of each other’s talents. For every Captain Toews jersey on Clark Street after Game Six ended, there were just as many Sharp, Bolland, Bollig, and Stalberg jerseys. Each player is important, and in the City of Big Shoulders, these shoulders stand strong because of the surrounding shoulders they have to rely on.

Blackhawks Win!

The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup because they are a solid powerhouse of talent. Congratulations, Chicago Blackhawks, thank you for a fantastic ride.

Peep the new whiz!

Peep the new shiz!

Now that it’s all over and the Chicago Blackhawks have won the Stanley Cup, all that’s left to do is party. Luckily, Clark Street Sports has a variety of Stanley Cup Championship shirts and hats to choose from for all of your Stanley Cup partying needs. We also have shirts so you can represent your favorite players like Andrew Shaw, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Corey Crawford, Duncan Keith, and many more. Sports Is Good!

Well, everyone, we’ve got a big weekend of sports coming at us, sports fans! Get that six pack! Find that recliner! Throw on your lucky jersey! It’s time to hunker down, grab some chicken wings, and pray for victory!

Unleash your untamed super fan TONIGHT!

Unleash your untamed super fan TONIGHT!

The Cubs and the White Sox bring some good, old fashioned summer baseball fun tonight. The Cubs play in New York and the White Sox are in Texas. Whether you’re a North Sider or a South Sider, you can agree that the boys of summer have returned and enjoy your beer and buddies with some baseball.

LeBron's still around, too.

LeBron’s still around, too.

This weekend also brings the fifth game between the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs. With the series tied at 2-2, the fifth game promises to be another gut-wrenching trip into the depths of playoff insanity. If Tony Parker’s hamstring can heal up and hold up through game five, perhaps he can prevent Mario “Super Nintendo” Chalmers from tearing apart the court in the second half. If you have ever cheered for the Bulls in your life, now is the time to cheer for the Spurs.

Let's see this again, fellas!

Let’s see this again, fellas!

Of course, the most important sporting event of the weekend, is the second game of the Stanley Cup Finals. It is crucial that the Blackhawks win Game Two before headed to Boston for the ugly Game Three. Hopefully this game won’t go into an extra game of hockey, but if it does all of Chicago will be freaking out until the final period ends.

No matter what sport you’re throwing your heart and your vocal chords into this weekend, we have got the attire you need to unleash the super fan within! Visit one of our stores for a Crawford shirt or get your Shaw shirt online at http://www.clarkstreetsports.com.
