Blackhawks and Cubbies and Bears, OH MY!

Even through the dog days of summer, the sports keep going and, as Sonny and Cher once said, the beat goes on. Even though we are in the off seasons of most sports, there is still a lot of news coming down the pipes about our favorite sports teams.

Hockey

Going for the Gold!

Going for the Gold!

The post-2013 season has the Blackhawks focusing on adjusting to a new roster and being recruited to represent their home countries at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Team Canada has recruited Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp, and Corey Crawford. Team USA has brought Nick Leddy, Brandon Saad, and sharp-shooter Patrick Kane to their team. In 2010 it came down to Kane vs. Toews for the gold and America went home with the silver medal. With this many Blackhawks skating to Russia in 2014, Chicago hockey fans will find a lot to scream at their television about as it will be difficult to root against either team with so many revered players pitted against each other for Olympic Gold. Congratulations to all of the Blackhawks chosen for the 2014 Winter Olympic games!

Comeback Kid

Boozer is not amused

The Bulls, and all of Chicago, are preparing for the much-awaited comeback of superstar Derrick Rose. His manager and brother, Reggie Rose, has been talking with the press about Rose’s recovery and says that Rose is ready to go. Reggie Rose says that he has “no concerns about [Derrick Rose] physically” and that taking a year off may have hurt the Bulls, but it was necessary for the longevity of his career. He believes “Derrick should probably be able to play fifteen to eighteen years,” so taking a year off was a means of making sure he was physically prepared to play basketball for the next two decades.

"Dude, this comeback had better not be a joke."

“Dude, this comeback had better not be a joke.”

The return of Rose is great news for Bulls fans, but sending Nate Robinson to the Denver Nuggets is definitely terrible news for Bulls fans as the heart of the 2013 playoffs is now someone we face instead of someone helping us block Lebron’s shots.

We're gonna miss you, buddy.

We’re gonna miss you, buddy.

So, with the return of Derrick Rose, the departure of Nate Robinson, and the shaky status of Luol Deng’s contract extension, what does the 2014 Chicago Bulls roster look like? The point guards look sharp with Derrick Rose, Kirk Hinrich, and Marquis Teague hitting the court. Rose’s return, if successful, will be a major boost for the Bulls, obviously. The skill and talent of Rose will be a great punch on the court; what will really stand out is that the heart and spirit of the team–both for the team and for the fans–is returning to the United Center. After a year and a half of anticipation, wondering down to the last game against the Miami Heat in the 2013 playoffs if Rose would make a miraculous return, the bright comet of the Chicago Bulls will blaze down the court again and set the competition ablaze. Our shooting guards and shooting forwards are looking sharp. Jimmy Butler is in need of some polish, but there is plenty of time to make sure that he is in the best condition to hit the court. Mike Dunleavy will serve as a secret weapon for the Bulls as the opposition will be on guard against the dynamite talent of Derrick Rose which will keep their eye distracted from the three-point power of Dunleavy. Power forwards Carlos Boozer, Taj Gibson, Malcom Thomas, and Erik Murphy are focused but in need of strengthening. Carlos Boozer is the 2014 Bulls’ Scottie Pippen, reliable with strong offense, but his defense needs a lot of work. Taj Gibson, on the other hand, brings a great defensive game. If the two could learn from each other, we would have two stunning power forwards on the court. Boozer’s on court relationship with Noah creates spectacular offense as well; they are a threat just like Pippen and Jordan when they hit the court together. Centers Joakim Noah and Nazr Mohammad round out the roster. Joakim Noah is the Bulls offense and does well adapting to the style of his teammates while remaining determined and focused. Mohammad does his job well with decent defense and use of fouls, but he is not good in long play. If Noah’s annual injuries flare up again, Mohammad will have big shoes to fill on the court as he is simply not on Noah’s level yet. The Bulls roster looks good, and they’ve proven that they can play without Rose. This year should provide us with amazing basketball as the return of Rose will only boost the ability of the already spectacular Chicago Bulls.

After many rumors and a lot of talks, the Cubs have traded Matt Garza to the Texas Rangers. In return the Cubs are getting third baseman Mike Ott and two right-handed pitchers, C.J. Edwards and Justin Grimm. The trade agreement also allows for the Cubs to acquire up to two more pitchers, possibly Neil Ramirez. This is proof that the Cubs are serious about rebuilding. It stands to reason that the Cubs are looking to build a good team that is could possibly begin winning because with all of the talk about revamping Wrigley Field, they should have a team good enough to draw fans into the expensive stadium. This also shows the Cubs are shifting away from keeping fan favorites and abandoning player loyalty and looking to rebuild a functioning baseball team that stands a chance to make the playoffs in the coming years.

BREAKING: If you keep eating that towel, you will not be hungry for lunch!

The Bears begin training camp on Thursday! Preseason football will be hitting our television screens in a matter of weeks. Hopefully the Bears will be taking this time to strengthen their offensive line and forcing Jay Cutler to step up his game in order to get the Bears into the playoffs this season. Chicago is hungry for another major sports victory, and the Bears have the talent and the drive to make it happen.

Olympians, returned superstars, new players, and new goals; the world of Chicago sports is spinning into very interesting areas. As these sports get revved up and ready to go, remember that one very important event happening this year is the retirement of Mike Ditka’s number in January. Sports Is STILL Changing!

Well, the NBA draft is in full swing and the Bulls are loading their team with new talent while renewing a few favorites. The biggest news from the Bulls draft is the acquisition of Mike Dunleavy Jr. from the Bucks.

Hey, ladies

Hey, ladies

Dunleavy comes to the Bulls after a phenomenal 2012-2013 season with the Bucks and will undoubtedly prove to be a valuable asset to the Bulls this upcoming season. Last season, the Bulls ranked 21st in three-pointers; Dunleavy’s previous season found him at 42.8% on three point shots and averaging 10.5 points per game. This two year deal worth $6 million brings about a game-changing addition to the Bulls. He will undoubtedly be a good help to Luol Deng who pushed himself to the limit in Rose’s absence averaging 16.5 points per game in seventy-five regular season games. Dunleavy has stated that working with Rose was an enticing perk of joining the Bulls as was being reunited with his former Duke Blue Devils’ teammate, Carlos Boozer. After playing for the Pacers and the Bucks, this third stop on Dunleavy’s Midwest basketball tour should prove to be stunning as he will serve as an unexpected threat to opposing teams who will undoubtedly be focused on the [hopefully] returned Derrick Rose. The return of Derrick Rose and the addition of Mike Dunleavy also makes the Bulls a substantial threat this season as the Rose-less 2012-2013 team was spectacular without Rose as they were forced to be a great team and step up to the challenge of getting to the playoffs. Adding Dunleavy and Rose into the mix is a game changer!

Hey, what about me, guys?

Hey, what about me, guys?

The saddest part of the ongoing story of the Chicago Bulls and the NBA draft is that Nate Robinson has not found a home. Surfing the wave of the free agency market, Robinson has been denied by both the Warriors and the Bucks. There were rumors that he was in talks with the Knicks, but nothing ever came from those supposed meetings. The Warriors opted for Toney Douglas, who averaged 7.5 points last season, and the Bucks chose to make a ten million dollar deal with Carlos Delfino, the player with such terrible overall numbers that he was waved by the Houston Rockets. The question arises: Why can’t 5′ 8″ Nate Robinson find a home? Robinson averaged 13 points per game and helped carry the Bulls to the NBA Playoffs where he went toe-to-toe against 6′ 8″ Lebron and the superstar-stacked Miami Heat.

OH, SNAP!

OH, SNAP!

Robinson also scored an astounding 23 points in the fourth quarter of a playoff game against the New York Nets. He played game six against the Nets while ill, taking breaks to sit on the sidelines and vomit before jumping back into the action. The Bulls are clearly counting on Derrick Rose to be fully healed and no longer be a magical basketball wizard without fragile glass bones as their priority should have been keeping Nate Robinson on the roster. For a team that is known for being a team of pure heart and determination, Nate Robinson is the reason they are known for that. Nate Robinson is the reason the Bulls advanced past the Nets. Nate Robinson is the reason the Bulls were able to fight hard against the Miami Heat. His statistics, performance, determination, and fan following should have been enough to convince the Bulls to keep him as a part of the team. If all of that were not enough, perhaps his amazing on-court relationship with 6′ 11″ Joakim Noah is one of the greatest things about professional basketball.

Reminder: Call your best friend

Reminder: Call your best friend

Hopefully Robinson, a clearly talented player, will find a home in the NBA because it would be a crime to deny an amazing player like Robinson an opportunity after such an amazing 2012-2013 season.

In Blackhawks news (that is unrelated to the Stanley Cup), former Blackhawks defensemen, Chris Chelios, is on the list of 2013 inductees for the Hockey Hall of Fame. He joins Brenden Shanahan and Scott Neidermayer as the inductees to the HHF this year and will be inducted November 11, 2013. Congratulations, Chris Chelios!

While his father is having his name preserved with other hockey legends, Jake Chelios is working on his own legacy at Blackhawks Prospect Camp. He and fifty-two others were invited to play at the Blackhawks Prospect Camp. Ryan Hartman, the top pick of the draft, was forced to be an observer due to surgery on his right shoulder. It is clear that now that the Stanley Cup is hitting the party circuit of the Windy City, the Blackhawks would like to keep it on that party train by spending the off season building the Avengers of hockey teams.

The Cup Can Party, Y’all!

Act like professionals for the photo, boys. There are more fun photo ops to come.

Act like professionals for the photo, boys. There are more fun photo ops to come.

Now that hockey is over and the Blackhawks have brought the Stanley Cup to Chicago, there is only one thing that the team can do: properly treat the Stanley Cup to the best time an inanimate object can have in the Windy City! Of course, the entire team is up to the task of treating this fella right, but with this rowdy bunch of winners, we’re certain the Stanley Cup is having such a great time after just a week, he’ll want to renew his lease in a year. So, where has the Cup been?

Hello, I'm a professional and this is professional.

Hello, I’m a professional and this is professional and we are all professional and pretending having the Stanley Cup on this table isn’t the coolest thing ever.

Like the rest of us, the Stanley Cup has to do work before it heads out to party. Luckily, Coach Quenneville (aka “Hockey Ditka”) is a total hockey professional and knows that the Stanley Cup has to be a grown up and tour the news shows before it can go out and party.

You can eat one out of the other!

You can eat one out of the other!

Of course, the news rounds drew the party when Man B Que brought the party with a meat-based party snack Stanley Cup! So, let’s hope the Stanley Cup was used to help make a stew or hold a delicious dip or marinade.

After making visiting the usual morning show talking heads, the Cup gets to go out with the team, and they make sure to show Lord Stanley’s Cup a marvelous time.

"Top Ten Reasons Why The Blackhawks Rule!"

“Top Ten Reasons Why The Blackhawks Rule!”

Patrick Kane took a break from partying hard to take the Stanley Cup to visit David Letterman in New York. This is definitely the tamest time the Cup has spent with Kaner, The Party Mullet Monster in it’s week in Chicago.

Wasted away again in PatrickKanerville.

The Stanley Cup accompanied Kaner onstage at a Jimmy Buffett concert where, we assume, it was filled with either margaritas or cheeseburgers in paradise.

Let's rock harder

Let’s rock harder

Not to be outdone by Patrick Kane, Keith and Carcillo took the Cup to a Rush show so it could recover from the beach ball volleying by getting rocked hard.

The Stanley Cup, no doubt, has many adventures ahead of it as the Blackhawks keep it in tow for a year of partying. Concerts, parades, and other events are certainly in its future here in Chicago and every citizen of the Windy City will have their eyes peeled to get their chance to be in the presence of Lord Stanley’s Cup. However, we can all agree that it’s greatest night was June 24 when it reflected the glow of champagne-soaked victory of the 2013 Chicago Blackhawks; it was definitely shining its brightest as it found itself in the glow and champagne spray surrounding Andrew Shaw.

Let's all get matching Andrew Shaw victory scream tattoos, Chicago!

Even though hockey is over, the Stanley Cup gives us a reason to keep celebrating until October when all our favorite guys hit the ice again, ready to defend their title. Show your support for Andrew Shaw with our selection of Andrew Shaw tee shirts and jerseys.

Let’s Make a Deal!

Well, it’s summer! It’s time for beer, picnics, beaches, saying good-bye to the recently-traded athletes, and saying hello to the newcomers to the world of Chicago sports. Yes, it’s that magical time of year when professional athletes are being traded like Pogs.

Pictured: Your age

Pictured: Your age

Yes, change is coming to the world of Windy City sports! This square dance of players and teams is a lot to keep up with, so let’s start with the best news of all, shall we?

Chicago Baseball

Thus far, the best news to come out of the wheeling and dealing of the trade game is that Carlos Marmol is almost the new problem of the Dodgers. The terrible relief pitcher and constant annoyance to Cubs’ fans is likely to be traded to Los Angeles unless he plays all of his six team rejections; if he does this he can become a free agent at the end of the season. However, it looks like the era of Marmol blowing it in the ninth inning is coming to an end. The darkness is over. The sun will come out tomorrow.

The truest thing ever put on Wikipedia ever.

The truest thing ever put on Wikipedia ever.

The Cubs also traded Scott Feldman and pitcher Steve Clevenger to the Baltimore Orioles for pitchers Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop. The White Sox, desperate to shake up their roster and get back to winning, signed outfielder Micker Adolfo Zapata, a sixteen-year-old from the Dominican Republic.

Chicago Bulls

Oh my God, you guys! I'm staying with the Bulls!

Oh my God, you guys! I’m staying with the Bulls!

Nazr Mohammed tweeted today that, essentially, he has gotten a verbal agreement with the Chicago Bulls and that he will be re-signed to Chicago. The fates of Luol Deng and Nate Robinson are still uncertain. However, it looks as though Deng will stay in Chicago while Robinson will be forced to find a home elsewhere in the NBA.

"Come 'ere, buddy. We're all gonna miss you."

“Come ‘ere, buddy. We’re all gonna miss you.”

The trade doesn’t quiet the rumors of friction in the power structure of the Bulls, however. The Bulls did not re-sign Ron Adams, Tom Thibodeau’s top assistant, when his contract expired. The rumor buzzing through the Internet is that there was friction between superstar coach Thibodeau and his assistant; meanwhile, General Manager Gar Forman assures there is no friction between Thibodeau and himself. Though friction between the higher-ups can create great success, just as the tension between Phil Jackson and General Manager Jerry Krause birthed the success of the Bulls in the nineties. Time will tell how this wheeling-and-dealing within the Bulls power structure will affect the Bulls.

Also, Derrick Rose is scheduled to play this season. So. we’ll see how that plays out.

Chicago Blackhawks

This fun is over, Bolly.

This fun is over, Bolly.

Well, with Bolland and Frolik hitting the happy trail to Canada, it’s clear that General Manager Stan Bowman is jumping quickly to preserve the Blackhawks’ impeccable roster of knock-down, drag-out talent. With a spectacular 2013 season, we are all hoping that Bryan Bickell will live up to the high expectations of fans and to the hard-earned contract extension. The NHL draft allowed for Bowman to give up Bolland and Frolik and fourth and fifth round picks for a pick in the second through fifth rounds. This also allowed the Blackhawks a fourth and fifth round pick in 2014 and four more years of Bickell. The fresh faces on the Blackhawks roster are looking spectacular and show that the Blackhawks are determined to tighten up their defensive line, a problem that brought them serious losses in the regular season and the playoffs. None of this guarantees a 2014 Stanley Cup victory, but Bowman is building one hell of a team to debut in October.

Let's hear it for the boy!

Let’s hear it for the boy!

With two of Chicago’s favorites leaving the team, let’s celebrate the superstar who was a big reason as to why the Stanley Cup is out and about partying with Patrick Kane: Bryan Bickell. Snag this Bryan Bickell player tee from our website (http://tinyurl.com/qjeq32m) and show your joy for the rough and tough left wing returning to the Blackhawks for another four years. It’s tough to see our favorites leave, but it’s better when the best stay because sports is good!

Party Hard and Welcome the New Class

We partied in the streets a week ago. We rested up to party in the streets at the Blackhawks rally on Friday. The Fourth of July parties will be starting at the end of this week. Yes, sports fans, it’s time to channel our inner Kaner this summer.

Party Like You Mean It!

Party Like You Mean It!

The Blackhawks rally got the City of Chicago amped for a summer of boozing, partying, and keeping an eye out for wherever Patrick Kane takes the Stanley Cup to party. The Blackhawks were ready to rock out on Friday; if you missed it, you missed the party-inspiring words of Corey Crawford:

“Fucking right, Chicago! Woo! Biggest bunch of beauties in the league, fucking worked their nuts off for this trophy!”

Macho Man Corey Savage has a bone to pick with you, HULK HOGAN!

Macho Man Corey Savage has a bone to pick with you, HULK HOGAN!

As the Blackhawks take their throne as the biggest sports team in the news, some stories about this great, amazing, Stanley Cup-hoisting team have fallen into the shadow of the high of victory. As we can all name the great players that helped Chicago reclaim Lord Stanley’s Cup, this past weekend brought two trades that have saddened many Blackhawks fans. The need to keep Bryan Bickell on the roster, the foresight necessary to manage money in order to renew Kane and Toews in the upcoming years, and the reality of keeping the pay cap free in order to recruit new talent and preserve current stars are the stars that aligned that determined the destiny of Dave Bolland and Michael Frolik, two incredible players that will now be headed away from Chicago to Canada.

Perhaps the looming trade is why The Rat was not having the best time at the rally.

Perhaps the looming trade is why The Rat was not having the best time at the rally.

The need to keep Bickell, a player who has been consistent and reliable all season, especially through the postseason, resigned to the Blackhawks with a four year contract extension at $16 million dollars (a pretty big jump from the $600,000 he earned this season). These trades will also make sure that superstars like Kane, Toews, and Sharp will be able to have a contract renewal when it’s time for them to head up to be traded.

Keeping Bickell is, clearly, an important priority. The other goal is to acquire talent that will live up to the legacy of the 2013 Chicago Blackhawks, the team that not only won the Stanley Cup but also had a record-breaking regular season. The draft allowed for the Blackhawks to add several new faces to the roster for next season. The Hawks snagged Carl Dahlstrom of Sweden, a reliable defensemen who possesses excellent shielding and board battle skills. However, Dahlstrom’s puck-handling is in need of polish, but this gain shows the Blackhawks are looking to strengthen their defensive line, something that gave them great trouble in the playoffs. They also grabbed Ryan Hartman, a player with the same style of Andrew Shaw and Bryan Bickell. He joins the Blackhawks after playing for the Plymouth Whalers with a 2013 season that racked up 37 assists and 60 points. This track record puts him on the road to being like Marian Hossa. The Blackhawks also picked up Anthony Lewis who scored 43 points in 53 games with the U18 squad. This left wing might be the smartest acquisition for the Blackhawks in the entire draft. Hopefully the new class will live up to the standard set by the 2013 roster of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Hockey doesn’t start up again until October, so we have a long time to party hard for the 2013 Chicago Blackhawks and even longer to unexpectedly meet the Stanley Cup somewhere in Chicago. From now until the Blackhawks hit the ice again, let’s party hard and represent our favorite players.
